National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

This annual observance focuses on raising awareness and deepening understanding of people with developmental disabilities and the many ways they contribute to our communities.

This month holds special meaning for all of us at Camp Allen NH. It is not only a time to celebrate the individuals and families we serve, but also an opportunity to reflect on how we can continue to foster not just awareness, but genuine acceptance and inclusion.

Taking the time to better understand people with developmental disabilities, and the unique circumstances they may experience, is just as important as raising awareness itself. That commitment to understanding is central to the goal of DDAM and closely reflects the mission of Camp Allen NH. It is through education, empathy and community connection that real progress in disability rights and inclusion continues to grow.

What is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month?

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month was originally established by the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD), an organization representing 56 state and territorial councils across the United States.

The goal of DDAM is to promote awareness and inclusion of people with developmental disabilities while also bringing attention to the barriers many still face in everyday life. Through social media campaigns, community events and shared resources, DDAM highlights the strength and resilience of communities that include people of all abilities.

Another important aspect of the month is encouraging individuals and organizations to share helpful resources, stories and opportunities that support people with developmental disabilities. Ultimately, DDAM is a time for people—with and without disabilities—to come together to increase awareness, encourage acceptance, and strengthen inclusive communities.

We’re Here: Then, Now, Always

Each year, the NACDD selects a theme to guide the observance of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. The theme for 2026 is “We’re Here: Then, Now, Always.” This theme highlights the progress made by the disability community while reinforcing the importance of continued advocacy for inclusion and community living.

The campaign connects past, present and future through a powerful storytelling framework:

Then: A time when many people with developmental disabilities were hidden, segregated or excluded from community life.

Now: Individuals living full lives — working, building friendships, parenting, volunteering and contributing to their neighborhoods.

Always: A future where community living is protected, expected and funded – and not viewed as a program, but as part of a whole life.

Then, Now, Always at Camp Allen NH

As Camp Allen NH enters its 95th season, our mission remains the same: to provide opportunities for growth, friendship, and fun for individuals with disabilities in a supportive outdoor environment.

For generations, Camp Allen NH has been a place where campers can experience new adventures, build lasting friendships and feel a strong sense of belonging. Through thoughtfully designed programs and the dedication of our counselors, nurses, staff and volunteers, we work together to create a safe, welcoming community where people of all abilities can thrive.

From laughter around the campfire to the confidence that comes from trying something new, the spirit of Camp Allen NH reflects the heart of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.
